Paint Drying Instructions

While latex paint is not considered a hazardous material, it cannot be disposed of unless the cans have completely dried out.

To dry cans less than 1/4 full

  • Remove the lid.
  • Place can in a safe, well-ventilated area.
  • Can contents dry in a few days.
  • Follow trash instructions below.

To dry cans more than 1/4 full

  • Protect your work surface by lining it with old newspaper.
  • You can purchase waste paint hardener, which is a more expensive alternative. One packet generally treats up to one gallon of unwanted latex or water-based paint.
For a more affordable solution you can use mulch, kitty litter, sawdust or shredded paper as a bulking/drying agent, but will take longer to solidify paint.
  • Stir and mix thoroughly.
  • Set aside for 2 to 3 days. At the end of that time, paint will have a tacky, oatmeal-like consistency, but will not spill out.
  • Follow trash instructions below.

Trash Instructions once cans are dried out

  • Remove lids from cans
  • Place the cans next to your regular trash container so they can be visibly inspected for dryness.
  • Any wet or soft paint that could spill will be left as unacceptable by collection crews.
  • You may place up to six paint cans out for collection at one time.
  • For more than six paint cans, request a free bulk collection.
